| Since the Sturgis Rally was the 69th annual this year, the theme to
our trip would be the summer of 69.
We left out of Houston at 9am on Friday morning, and rode 876 miles
to Holdrege Nebraska where we stayed the first night.
Day 2 we rode another 470 miles to our campgrounds in Sturgis. We spent
the next 5 days taking scoping out the sights in and around the Black
Hills area.
We left out on Thursday afternoon and started our journey back to Texas,
although, it would be 8 more days and 2300 miles later.
On the way back home we took a little journey through Colorado taking
in all the beauty of the mountains and towns. We Stayed in Ft. Collins
for the night, then rode over to Buena Vista the next day, where we
found there were no rooms available so we rode on over to Salida and
found a really quaint little motel there.
The next morning we rode back past Buena Vista and headed over Independence
Pass down into Aspen, then over to Carbondale where we went South to
the Black Canyon area and Blue Mesa Reservoir and on to Gunnison and
a nice overnight stay at the Waterwheel Inn.
It is now Monday morning on the 10th of August. After breakfast we rode
over Monarch Pass to Montrose, Ouray, over Red Mountain Pass (Million
Dollar Highway) to Silverton and had lunch in Silverton. We then rode
over Weminuche Pass to Durango and stayed there for the night. While
in Durango I rode around and located the house I lived in back in the
early 70's.
The next day we rode over through Pagosa Springs then over Wolf Creek
Pass to South Fork and up the Silver Thread Highway (149) over 2 more
mountain pass towards Gunnison and on into Canon City for the night.
We then awoke and headed out on a short day over to Trinidad via Highway
69 where we encountered a doe and 3 little yearlings crossing the road
in front of us. We actually stopped and watched as the slowly crossed
then scampered of into the trees. Along the way we also went down highway
12 Highway of Legends out of Walsenburg to Trinidad where we stayed
the night and visited with some friends that live in the area.
It is now 8:30am (Houston Time) Thursday morning August the 13th and
time to get back to Texas. The plan was to stop off in Abilene for the
night, but after only a couple hundred miles we decided to tough it
out and ride straight on to Houston. So after 15 and a half hours and
820 miles we arrived at the house a little after midnight.
